In 2007, the Department of Children and Families DCF and the Office of Drug Control funded the development of Monroe County Coalition under Federal grants from Substance Abuse Mental Health Services SAMHSA Administration (Strategic Prevention Framework SPF grant) and Drug Free Communities Alcohol Initiative. The goal was to mobilize Monroe County to encourage data driven outcome based planning processes for substance abuse prevention. At that time, Monroe County was one of three counties which did not have a substance abuse prevention coalition. The coalition group includes partnerships with the Dept. of Health and Students Working Against Tobacco, Guidance Clinic/Care Center, Schools, A Positive Step of Monroe County, Human Services Associates HSA, Island 107 Radio, youth, Monroe County Schools, Key West Police Dept. KWPD, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office MCSO, Dept. of Juvenile Justice DJJ and others. Monroe County Coalition works with many sectors in the community to create population changes through evidence based programs, policies and environmental strategies reduce alcohol and drug related harms.
