Parents

‘It’s 10 p.m. Do you know where your Teenager is?’

Prom and Graduation are right around the corner and summer season has begun, it is especially important to know where your teenager is at all times. You have protected them from harms since they were born. Don’t stop now!

Tips for Parents

Have open conversations on your teen’s planned activities

  • Before prom or graduation activities and throughout the summer, have continuous conversations. Ask questions such as who they plan to be with, where they are going.
  • Discuss the possibility that they may be in a position where alcohol is provided.
  • Develop a plan for your teen to leave, be picked up by you, etc.
  • Volunteer for Safe Graduation and other school activities. Alcohol is easily to acquire for teens
  • Many of your youth’s peers have experience with obtaining alcohol from homes (maybe even yours), businesses, older friends and family members.
  • Make sure you are not the one providing. Keep your alcohol locked or store away from youth access.
  • If you do receive a call from law enforcement regarding your child’s activities, thank them. They are only trying to protect your youth and keep them safe.

Medicine Cabinet safety

  • Youth are now taking prescription drugs for recreation and often mixing many different kinds of them. Watch your medicine cabinet. Dispose of unused medications by calling Monroe County Sheriff’s Office for assistance.

Discuss peer pressure

  • Peer pressure often makes teens feel like they should be doing things they normally would not do, including using alcohol or drugs. Discuss back up plans with your teen to keep them safe.
  • Develop an escape plan if the driver they are with is drinking or using drugs which may include you picking them up. Remind them to NEVER, NEVER get into the car of someone drinking or using drugs.
  • Remember, Peer Pressure is bigger and stronger than you are. Keep Talking!

Don’t make assumptions when it comes to teen activities

  • Stay involved in your teen’s activities!
